Cadet Summer Training

Cadets spend time with Bulgarian soldiers in, out of the classroom

Team one has officially been in Bulgaria for one week and what a week it has been! We have been working with the soldiers at the military academy in Shumen for five days now and it has been quite the experience. Each cadet has been able to learn about the soldiers’ life and work while teaching them English vocabulary and American customs. This involved vocabulary and grammar lessons, as well as analytical discussions of military and cultural norms. In exchange we learn about their language and culture. Cadets were also able to take one of the English tests that the Bulgarians are required to pass at the end of the course.

Here are some photos of cadets in the classroom:

While we are working hard and teaching the Bulgarians a lot of information, team one is still finding time to hang out with the Bulgarian students outside of the classroom. The leaders and students of the military academy have been wonderful and have taken us to many different activities in the community. We were able to learn about some of the weapons that the Bulgarian army uses, as well as exploring historical sites around Shumen. One such site included the Fortress of Shumen located on a hill that overlooked the city. We also spent quality time with Bulgarians in the community over dinner, dancing and chatting at local cafes. They were very excited to teach use the customs and traditions of their community while practicing their English, and we were just as excited to learn.
